Gyasi Abu Umar was born in
Washington,
D.C.
and grew up in
Memphis, TN. He reverted to Islam at the age of 16 in Memphis. At the age of
19, he left his undergraduate studies at the University of Houston to study at
the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia where he earned his Bachelor’s
degree in Da’wah. Currently, he is a teacher and head of the Islamic Studies
curriculum at Pleasant View Islamic School (Memphis, TN), and an active
participant in many community activities. Some of his lectures can be found at
the Memphis Dawah website (www.memphisdawah.com).
In addition, Br. Gyasi has given numerous Islamic lectures to Muslims and
non-Muslims alike.
